An Authy desktop alternative

Twilio retired the Authy desktop apps in 2024. If you used to copy codes from Authy on your computer, Twincode puts them back in your browser. Here’s how to move across.

Why you can’t just export from Authy

Authy keeps your accounts locked inside the app, with no official way to export them. So moving away means setting up each site again. It takes about a minute per site, and Twincode gives you a checklist so nothing gets missed.

Keep Authy on your phone until every site is done. It’s your safety net while you move across.

Moving each site across

  1. Add Twincode to Chrome and choose Microsoft Authenticator or Authy when it asks where your codes are. It opens the checklist.
  2. List your sites. Open Authy on your phone and add every site you see there to Twincode’s checklist. It stays on your computer, even if you close the tab.
  3. Open a site’s security settings. Look for “Two-step verification”, “2FA” or “Authenticator app”, then choose to set it up again or change the app.
  4. Scan the new QR code with Twincode. Click Twincode in your toolbar and choose “Scan QR on this page”, or right-click the page and choose “Scan 2FA QR code on this page”.
  5. Scan the same QR code with your phone too. Many sites cancel the old code when you set up a new one, so your phone needs the new one as well. Any authenticator app will do.
  6. Type the code the site asks for, and tick the site off. Then move on to the next one.

Tips that save time

  • Start with your email. It’s the account that can reset most of the others.
  • Save new backup codes when a site offers them. Twincode has a place for each account’s backup codes.
  • Some sites make you turn 2FA off, then on again, to change the app. That’s normal. Do it in one go, so the account isn’t left without 2FA.
  • When every site is ticked off, check a code or two in Twincode before you stop using Authy.

What you get instead

  • Your codes in your browser, one click from wherever you’re typing.
  • No account and no phone number. Your codes are locked on your computer with a password only you know.
  • Free sync between your computers, through your browser’s own sync, carrying only the locked copy.
  • Backups you control: a locked backup file, or plain links most apps can read.
